An Intern’s Take

By Ilyassha Shivers

Here we are in the first week of April, with warm weather right around the corner and it’s amazing how things are beginning to heat up around our beautiful city. The courts have yet to decide the fate of Stop and Frisk, as we hear disturbing testimony from our police commissioner and other high profile officials. And to make matters worse now we have our own State Senator Malcolm Smith attempting to bribe his way into this year’s mayoral race. Are you serious?

It’s like a bad episode of Law and Order. When I first heard the breaking news I could not believe it. How could he think this scheme could work? It’s still too early to know but they say where there is smoke there is usually a fire. And this one appears to be an inferno.

Malcolm Smith’s rise to power has been tainted, to say the least, and now with this new development, where do we go from here? The people of the Rockaways need to know what’s going on. With millions of dollars of Sandy relief funds to be allocated, and Senator Smith part of the committee, who will take up the reigns to make sure that the Rockaways get their fair share when it comes to the allocation of funds? And as far as Malcolm Smith goes, where does he go from here? What happens to all the programs that were funded by him? They must all be looked at with a bit of concern. Where did Senator Malcolm go wrong? When did he decide that he was above the law? Who knows? These are questions that will be answered in the coming days, so I guess we shouldn’t rush to judgment.

There is a saying that my grandmother used, “be careful how you make your bed, because you may have to lie in it.” So, that being said, we have to wait and see where the cards fall. How deep does this scandal go, who else was involved? Only time will tell. What do you think?
