SFDS 5th Grade Boys Celebrate A Winning Hoops Season!
Despite many obstacles at the start of their basketball season, including being displaced from their homes and schools, their gym being destroyed and not being able to practice as a team, the eleven boys — Ian Byrne, Dillon Ostrander, Mike McManus, James Resker, Thomas Resker, Kyle Duffy, Jack Collins, Matty McDonagh, James Tuohey, Terence Marten and Seamus O’Connell emerged as true champions.
Says the school, they proved to be STRONGER than Superstorm Sandy as reflected in their record of 22 wins and 8 losses for the year.
At the Sacred Heart Christmas Tournament, they finished in the final three out of 12 teams.
March Madness it was, as they battled their way amongst 12 teams to make it to the championship game in the St. Margaret’s tournament.
Continuing their impressive record, they went round for round in the CYO Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan Playoffs courageously earning a spot in the Sweet 16, then Elite 8 and onto the Final Four. It was there where they met one of their toughest adversaries, St. Joe’s. After a fierce competition, the SFDS Dream Team’s athleticism and passion overcame St. Joe’s in overtime.
Next up, the SFDS team found themselves as finalists in the Brooklyn/ Queens Diocesan Championship out of 50 teams! Their amazing run continued in the St. Thomas Apostle Tournament where they played their hearts out and once again found themselves in the championship game and won. Kyle Duffy won the Frankie Caropolo Award for sportsmanship, skills and love of the game.
Saint Francis offers congratulations to all the boys and their coaches, Marty and Keith Andresen.
