Rockaway Kosmos Soccer Rockets Back

Rockaway’s Kosmos soccer teams celebrated a return to the playing fields on a snowy, St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Rockaway’s Kosmos soccer teams celebrated a return to the playing fields on a snowy, St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Hurricane Sandy disrupted a lot of lives including the soccer players of the Rockaway Kosmos. Ending the fall season six weeks early, many of the teams needed to make up New York Cup games by the first week of April. The weather for the Rockaway GU9 Nemesis and GU11 Nikh teams played another trick on them two weeks ago when their scheduled games were canceled again because of snow.

This past St. Patrick’s Day weekend both teams had rescheduled games. And again it snowed. But this time they all played!

GU9 Nemesis traveled to Manhasset for their second NY Cup game. The game tied at 1-1 going into the second half. Working hard to keep possession, in the last minutes of the game the other team scored, ending the game 2-1 Manhasset. Nemesis still keeps the lead in their Cup bracket. They have another makeup game in April.

GU11 Nikh player traveled to Calverton, way out on Long Island, in the snow on Saturday, March 16th. It was Nikh’s first time out for the season and you could tell they were out of sorts, ending the first half 4-0, East End Soccer. During half time the players pulled themselves together, they cheered louder than ever and told each other this is not how we are leaving today!

East End Soccer had no idea that they were playing the same team they played ten minutes ago. Nikh came out strong and they were NOT going down without a fight.

Goal, goal, goal!!! The other team was shaken - score 4-3, them. Nikh scored again, 4-4. Then East End scored again, 5-4. Two minutes left - Nikh tied the score 5-5.

This was Soccer, in the snow, at its best!!!

The season begins again March 18th! Rockaway Kosmos are always looking for players- boys and girls; ages 7-16! Contact: kosmosrockaway@aol.com.
