Got An Idea? Let’s Hear It!
Come one, come all. The Wave is giving MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) a hand in collecting ideas for Rockaway. On Saturday, March 30th from 2 – 5 p.m. Wave editor Kevin Boyle and Ideas Wanted columnist Rick Horan will set up a video camera in the Dome at Beach 94th Street and gather ideas about the boardwalk and other Rockaway needs from Rockaway locals. A second session is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2nd from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
It’s a first come, first served chance to step up to the mic and have your ideas taped and then presented to a jury for consideration.
Some weeks back, MoMA PS1 announced a “Call for Ideas” with the hope that people from around the world would offer ideas about how to make Rockaway a more attractive, resilient place. The rules required the submission of a three minute or less video presentation. Nearly 150 entries were submitted before the March 15th deadline (some from Rockaway residents).
Recognizing that not everyone in Rockaway has video making skills, organizers at MoMA wanted to offer some additional outreach to the community so MoMA PS1 Director Klaus Biesenbach asked The Wave and social media outlet Rockaway Help to assist.
Although the March 15th deadline has passed for individual video submissions, the interviews filmed on March 30th and April 2nd will be reviewed by the contest jury which also includes members of the Rockaway community.
Boyle and Horan are old hands at asking for ideas as they are involved in an ongoing project called “Ideas Wanted.” This past summer, they were featured in a lengthy New York Times article and were scheduled to appear on CBS This Morning when Sandy struck.
The plan for the March 30th and April 2nd sessions are simple. The two men will set up a camera and offer a microphone to all locals who have ideas. Horan may ask follow up questions but the general idea is for people to state their ideas in a minute or less. (There will be a strict three minute time limit per individual).
Should be fun.
Come down, see the dome for yourself, and offer an idea or two!
