It’s My Turn

By Phil McManus

I believe Rockaway needs a Seawall with a wooden Boardwalk on top.

We also should have a double bike path separated by beautiful landscaping next to the Seawall Boardwalk.

We need high rock or concrete jetties which can be used as a pier, high and long beaches, and high and long dunes near the boardwalk.

We should raise the entire Park side from street to seawall to appropriate protective flooding heights with steps and ramps on both sides - street side and beach side.

We could have handball, basketball, volleyball, tennis courts, baseball fields with batting cages and netting, soccerfootball fields, hockey rinks, skateboard park, running tracks, miniature golf, a water park, pool, shaded areas, music stages, restaurants, stores, kiddie rides, swings, slides, and beautiful landscaping.

We could also have boat, kayak, surfboard, sailboat, sailboard, jet ski, etc., lessons and rentals.

I would also like to see a well- managed amusement park like Jenkinson’s of Point Pleasant, NJ.

These ideas come from a combination of beach destinations such as Virginia Beach seawall and bike path, Rehoboth Beach Delaware boardwalk and dunes, Ocean City MD, Seaside Heights, NJ, and Wildwood, NJ, boardwalks and Myrtle Beach.

We could also have the Major League Soccer Stadium and the USTA expansion for Rockaway, Queens.

We need to improve school grades and prepare and teach our kids for college and the workplace.

We also need improved roadways with better lighting, replace and improve the bay seawalls, improve the bulkheads, increase recreational and business opportunities, raise the streets, and provide increased boat ramps and ferry terminals on the bayside of Rockaway.

We need to eliminate the tolls on the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge so we can unite with all of Queens and improve mutual community and business interest.

Improve and increase Queens public transit for all of Queens including the Woodhaven Boulevard, Cross Bay Boulevard corridor and reopening the unused train tracks which closely run 4parallel to this same corridor.

These investments would create more business, improve transportation, increase tax revenues, increase opportunities and employment, increase property values, improve community image and pride and spread tourism to much needed communities.

I believe each community should be included and a mutual plan for flood protection, seawalls, dunes, jetties, sand, etc., must be a united effort.

We need to work together and listen to all the people who live, work and play in Rockaway and Queens.

This is my dream for Rockaway, Queens.
