School Theft Suspect Caught

Suspect Kevin Smith is led out of the 100th Precinct by Detective John Bellico after being arrested for the post-Sandy theft of computers from the Scholars’ Academy school. Detectives at the 100th Precinct announced the arrest of Kevin Smith in connection with a post-Sandy theft from the Scholars’ Academy in Rockaway Park.

Smith, taken into custody on Tuesday, February 26th, was charged with the November 16th theft of two iMac computers from a second floor classroom.

In addition to burglary, he was also charged with illegal entry and possession of stolen property.

Smith, working for the Iannelli Construction company, was in the building shortly after Hurricane Sandy to make repairs to the storm damaged school.

According to reports, Smith’s actions were captured on surveillance cameras two weeks after the storm, leading to his arrest.

Arresting officer Detective John Bellico, noted the diligent work that lead to the arrest, stating it was important to the precinct to see this case resolved due to the nature of the crime.
