Tales From The Wheelhouse/Rockaway Outdoors

By Captain Vinnie Calabro

Well it’s pretty obvious there seems to be a little more sunshine sneaking through each day, and Mother Nature as well as the outdoorsman suffering from cabin fever are beginning to stir.

April 15th, the start of the striped bass fishing in New York, is just around the corner and I think even though the water and air temperatures have been cold compared to last winter the fish will be here on time.

The bay itself is still somewhat “chewed up” from Sandy but each tide flushes new life into it. I’m sure any anglers boating this spring will be surprised at the appearance of the back bays.

Locally the east end seems to have the better fishing as cod continue to be caught. Also offshore sea bass excursions by the head boats targeting them have been good.

However the boats out of Sheepshead and Freeport also have had fish. The cod fish produced catches all winter for the most part and although lighter by comparison to the past few seasons it still produced enough fish to make the trek worthwhile.

Now’s the time to evaluate your tackle if you haven’t done so already and visit the outdoor shows of which there are quite a few. Rockland County’s show is probably the most recognized and the biggest.

Well there you have it until the next tide….
