Ulrich Thanks, Now Open Your Eyes
First I want to say thank you to Eric Ulrich for having the Town Hall meeting at PS 114 last night with representatives from the Tax Commission, the NYS Department of Finance, and FEMA. Unfortunately, I have to critique him for being unprepared and uninformed. I don’t understand why a seasoned politician would sponsor a meeting for a large group of people without bringing any kind of sound amplification device. A big thank you goes to Lew Simon for saving the evening with his megaphone.
Also I have tremendous difficulty understanding how Mr. Ulrich could seem so surprised to hear that there are many people who have not been able to return to their homes since the storm, and will not be able to for at least a year or more. I wonder what planet Mr. Ulrich has been on for the past four months. Has he not taken a walk along the beachfront and seen the terrible destruction that so many homes suffered, or the “For Sale” signs planted in the sand where houses used to be? Hasn’t he noticed the large blocks of homes and businesses that were completely destroyed by fire? Has he not heard of a community called Breezy Point where a large percentage of people will not be able to return to their homes for a very long time, if ever? Maybe it is very difficult, if not impossible, for many of these people to attend community meetings, since they are not living in the area and just have way too much to deal with. The people who were hit hardest by this tragedy are the ones who need the most help from our local politicians. They should not be overlooked.
