Okay, the Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade is Saturday which is a mouthful when you think about it. I’m thinking it should just be called Shamrock. The Rockaway version is kinda the Woodstock of the many St. Pat’s Parades there are. You’ve got Brooklyn’s 7th Avenue and Staten Island pretenders. And you’ve got the Big One in Manhattan on St. Patrick’s Day. Call that one the St. Patrick’s Parade and call the Rockaway version Shamrock. (Short for Shamrockaway, of course).
Maybe this is one of those juvenile thoughts I have and I’ll be embarrassed when I see it in print. It does sound like an idea I’d have several hours into parade day. But I dunno, the marketing possibilities… people from all over the world coming to Shamrock. Hmm… Ok, that’s dumb.
So I take it back. I can already see the backlash from my mother’s gang who will put bumper stickers on their cars: let’s keep St. Patrick in St. Patrick’s Day.
Besides, I better go easy with the Shamrock ideas because my name is already mud with the Parade Committee. I understand things got so bad they were calling me Kevin Schwach.
With a smaller staff at The Wave and so many advertisers still recovering, the Wave could not produce a special pull-out section with a bunch of bios of the various honorary marshals. I had nothing to do with the decision and have been supporting the parade from the git-go. See the front page! But through some misunderstanding someone suggested I was behind the call to limit coverage. Hardly. Still, I expect grudges have been born out of the rumor that I’m the guy who rained on the parade committee.
I’m just a bit curious about whether I’ll get the 10, 20 or a lifetime Irish grudge. I’ve experienced them all – and that’s just from my family.
Boyleing Points: I hear the baffle walls that are going up to protect Beach 126th through Beach 19th Streets will have a sample on display this weekend. Mayor Bloomberg will be marching in the parade surrounded by set of baffle walls – though I’m not quite sure how he’s going to see his way over the four foot high walls.
**More memories to remember: The night of the Storm – I heard a report of a school of Halloween pumpkins floating past houses as did a set of antlers from someone setting up Christmas decorations a bit on the early side. There was also a report of a raccoon surfing past houses on a piece of driftwood or boardwalk.
**Happy birthday to Kevin Judge born on February 29. Some kids gripe about getting shortchanged on gifts if they’re born too close to Christmas. How ‘bout if your birthday only comes every four years?
**Have a great parade day!
