Ken And Jen’s Fitness Forum

We’re Jen Font de Bon & Kenny Peña, certified trainers, spinning instructors and nutrition nuts from Suncycle Studios. Our goal is to help people reach theirs. We promote physical, mental and emotional health, aiding others in finding and maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

Cabin Fever. In winter months it’s natural to feel restless, depressed and irritable. Whatever your case may be, there are simple things you can do to boost your mood and beat the winter blues!

EXERCISE. Exercise increases endorphins, creating higher states of happiness, relaxation and levelheadedness. People who exercise regularly (3- 5 days/week) have more energy, feel better and are at less risk of health problems and disease. Include it in your routine: Bundle up and walk or jog outside, partake in group activities, such as indoor cycling or yoga…even turn up the music and dance around your living room! Whatever it takes to get the blood pumping and “happy hormones” flowing!

EXPOSURE TO NATURAL LIGHT. It’s gray outside, but sunlight’s coming through those clouds. Sunlight in moderation is an essential source of bodily energy. It strengthens immunity, improves circulation, kills infection, helps maintain healthy sleep cycles, lowers cholesterol, raises endorphin levels, and betters overall mood. Let there be light: Open blinds and let in natural light. Also, make an effort to get outside, even for just a few minutes each day.

HEALTHY MEALS, FRESH INGREDIENTS. During wintertime we tend to eat heavy foods like meat and potatoes. Ever hear the saying, “You are what you eat?” Don’t let diet weigh you down. Bring lightness to your menu: Make a colorful plate choosing in-season fruits and vegetables. Citrus fruits provide daily doses of Vitamin C. Toss clementines on salads to boost immunity, mood, and flavor. Also, include dark, leafy greens in your diet. “Superfoods” like spinach and kale are packed with important vitamins for maintaining a healthy heart, good circulation, glowing skin, shiny hair, and a smiling face!

AIR-FILTRATION. It’s cold outside. Windows and doors stay shut, allowing bacteria to spread. Ventilate: Open windows once a day to let fresh air in and stale air out. Air purifiers help keep a clean and healthy environment as well.

TRY SOMETHING NEW. Avoid ruts by engaging in hobbies and activities. Socialize: Flip through the newspaper, collect flyers and listen for group activities/ events in the neighborhood. People who maintain active social lives are happier, healthier, less stressed and more confident. Join clubs or take group fitness classes to keep yourself on track.

Suncycle Studios offers a variety of exciting group classes including indoor cycling, sculpting, kettlebell, kickboxing, and our signature SuSPINsion (non-impact strength training where you use your own body weight to slim and tone). We also offer TEEN CLASSES for strength, sports performance and fitness. Check our website for an up-to-date schedule: suncyclestudios.com.

Be proactive. Little changes go a big way, so adjust your winter routine for a healthier, happier you!
