The Place I Am From
I am from a place where not many can say the same,
A resilient beach community in New York City,
A piece of land surrounded by water,
A place that is unique and special to say the least.
I am from a place where you get what you give,
A tight-knit community that feeds off the goodness of others,
A place where inspired organizations service the needs of our community,
A place where heroes reside.
I am from a place where everyone is your neighbor,
A place where selfishness is not in our vocabulary,
A population who shares more than just a zip code,
A group of people who have a story unlike any other.
I am from a place where the sky went black twice in 2001,
A neighborhood whose children have seen more than they should have,
A place that has been dealt a hand not many could handle,
And through it all we’ve never folded.
I am from a place where our story continues,
A place that has been devastated by the storm Super Sandy,
A peninsula where fire, wind and water swept through the night,
A place where the ocean welcomed itself into our homes.
I am from a place where many families remain homeless,
A place that has been flattened and refaced entirely,
A place where businesses remain shut down,
A place that will take years to rebuild.
I am from a place that has taught me what’s important in life,
A place that has never accepted defeat and never will,
I am from a place where you’ll never be alone,
A place I call paradise, no a place I call home.
Revive. Rebuild. Renew. Rockaway
