Mid-winter kayaking adventurers became rescue victims on Saturday, February 9th, when their kayak flipped over in Jamaica Bay off of Broad Channel.

A helicopter from NYPD’s Air Sea Rescue # 14 responded and found one of the kayakers, a 32-year-old male. Detective Brian Singer and Police Officer Marian Kopystianskyj, both divers for the Harbor Unit jumped from the helicopter and rescued the man from the water. He was taken to the Aviation Base at Floyd Bennett Field and was then transported by ambulance to Kings County Hospital where he was being treated for hypothermia. He is in stable condition.

Detective John Kenny also responded to the scene. He saw the second kayaker swimming to a boat on the way to the rescue. Detective Kenny put on his wet suit and swam 200 yards to meet the man at the boat. The man was suffering from hypothermia.

Officers for the Harbor Adam harbor unit based in Canarsie arrived on the scene and brought the second kayaker and Officer Kenny to shore. The EMS arrived and took the kayaker to Jamaica Hospital.
