(Photo by Dan Guarino) Visitors coming off the Joseph P. Addabbo Bridge and into Broad Channel have often encountered a white bicycle, called by some the ‘ghost bike’, on the Cross Bay Boulevard median strip. Installed several years ago, and adorned with stuffed toys and candles, it is a memorial to fallen riders.

The familiar white bicycle held fast all through Hurricane Sandy, but lost its front wheel to the storm.

To put it right, Broad Channel Bits columnist Dan Guarino put out a call asking if anyone had a spare front tire. Temporarily displaced Channel resident Jim Murphy and his family generously answered with a brand new bike wheel.

One air fill up and one can of white spray paint (both obtained locally) later and the white bicycle was whole again and greeting visitors to Broad Channel once more.
