As The Belle Harbor School (PS 114) starts to return to normalcy after Hurricane Sandy, they made a big step in the process when publishing company Scholastic donated 10,000 new books for the students.

Scholastic has donated one-million books to schools and libraries affected by the storm through a grant program. Their donation to The Belle Harbor School “will help replenish our classroom libraries and ensure that our students and teachers are equipped with adequate reading materials,” Cynthia Clifford, a PS 114 parent, said in an e-mail.

More than 100 schools around the area applied for Scholastic grants and have received similar donations.

Clifford and parents, Stacy Bennett, Irene Dougherty and Kathy Meade applied for the Scholastic grant and they picked up a delivery on nine pallets of books with the help of Clifford’s husband, Michael, who rented a U-Haul. Several volunteers, including Brian Donnelly, Kamin Green, Butch Brandes, members of the PS 114 8th grade class, as well as two volunteers from Xavier helped to unload and carry the books.
