Rombout Fire Department to The Rescue
The donation is to support the rebuilding efforts after Sandy. Firefighters battled blazes, which destroyed more than 130 homes, while wading through chest high floodwaters at the peak of the storm.
The Point Breeze firehouse sustained heavy flood damage and equipment was destroyed.
The group from Rombout viewed the area, listened to firefighters talk about that long night and toured the damaged firehouse.
They also discussed the Point Breeze rebuilding plans and how the community is recovering.
One story was about how the volunteer firefighters spent days cleaning the firehouse so that the local children could have a Christmas party. They said it was important because the kids were attending many different schools far from home and the party would be the first time some would see their friends since the storm.
The upstate fire company raised funds from two of their monthly pancake breakfasts.
Rombout Fire Company Vice-President Marc Breimer, who helped to organize this relief effort, commented,“The Point Breeze Fire Department initially received donations of food, water and clothing but now that the rebuilding has started their needs are more financial in nature, to buy building supplies like 2x4’s and sheetrock.
“The Rombout Fire Company could not [have made this donation] without the support of the Fishkill community.”
