Scenes You Might Have Missed From Hurricane Sandy

Scenes of Hurricane Sandy’s damage were widespread throughout the Rockaways.

With its full force hitting after nightfall and most people concerned with basic survival, fewer pictures were taken during the storm itself.

Here are a few that show what cannot be described in words.

The days after revealed a boardwalk pulled and twisted like an old Playland rollercoaster, cars tossed like toys, heavy gates peeled from storefronts and houses reduced to just their foundations.

Lifelong residents and astonished newcomers alike noted they have never witnessed such destruction before.

Other new and strange sights were revealed after the storm, like an elephant emerging from the sand, a fire alarm box knocked flat and no longer able to sound the alarm, and a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier just off the Rockaway coast.

Here photographers bring Sandy’s wrath to life.
