Graybeards Dinner Dance Is On
The Graybeards Annual Dinner Dance was almost canceled – almost – because of Hurricane Sandy but members of one of Rockaway’s most prominent non-profits decided that it would take more than a super storm to call off the annual fun. (Several years ago, a historic blizzard on the actual night of the Dinner Dance occurred and that didn’t stop the party). Although many members of the group own homes which were severely damaged in the storm the group was able to marshal enough forces to coordinate a fundraising campaign in the days and weeks that followed. With an office that was put out of commission and members busy with damaged homes, the Graybeards decided they could be most effective by raising cash through donations and then dispersing the money to those in need.
The group pledged that 100 percent of money raised would go back to the community with administrative costs picked up by the Graybeards themselves.
The campaign for funds was a huge success as they were able to raise more than $600,000. Online contributions totaled more than $475,000 with donations coming from all over the country.
The Annual Dinner Dance is usually the Graybeards’ main fundraiser but this year it was decided that with so many members out of pocket with Sandy expenses that it would be best to lower ticket prices and simply cover costs of the event. The Graybeard Board decided to de-emphasize fundraising but that a night out was something many people could use.
The Annual Dinner Dance draws many people from Rockaway who are not Graybeards. Many people come to support the group’s mission and to have a good time.
This year’s event will be at El Carib on Saturday evening, January 26th. Tickets are $75 per person (lowered from the usual $125 per) and can be reserved by calling The Graybeard office 718-634-6812 or visiting their website, graybeards.com
