(Photo by Alison Teitler) For several hours residents were without water service, on Saturday January 5, due to a main break at Beach 136 Street.

The Department of Environmental Protection reported that at 3:30 p.m. a contractor accidentally hit the 12-inch main while doing beach repairs for the NYC Department of Parks.

About 250 residents were affected when the water system had to be shut down.

According to spokesperson Mercedes Padilla, the DEP had their own contractor in the area and 90% of customers had water back within three to four hours.

The damaged main was replaced and service to all was running by midnight.

“We really appreciate the residents’ and community’s understanding during these events,” Padilla said.
