MORELAND COMMISSION ANNOUNCES PUBLIC HEARINGS

The Moreland Commission on Utility Storm Preparation and Response has announced hearings to solicit comments from the public on the following two topics: The emergency preparedness and response of utilities to recent storms. Recommendations for restructuring the oversight of energy utilities in New

York, including LIPA, to improve the reliable and affordable transmission of power.

A hearing will be held for the Rockaways on Thursday, January 17th at 6 p.m. at Challenge Preparatory Charter School, 710 Hartman Lane, Far Rockaway.

There will be a hearing on Staten Island on Wednesday, January 23rd, at the Bernikow/Mid-Island Jewish Community Center of Staten Island, 1466 Manor Road at 6 p.m.

There will also be a hearing for Westchester, Putnam and Rockland on Thursday, January 24th at 6 p.m. SUNY Purchase Performing Arts Center, 735 Anderson Hill Road, Purchase, NY.

The Staten Island and Rockaway hearings were rescheduled to take the place of hearings cancelled due to bad weather.

Members of the public wishing to testify at the hearing are asked to address these two specific issues.

They will be able to register to speak at each event and are asked to keep their oral comments to no more than three minutes to allow as many people as possible to share their views.

The public may also submit written comments before or after the hearings at comments@moreland.ny.gov.

Those who are unable to present testimony on those dates may also submit testimony at comments@moreland.ny.gov.

To date, the Moreland Commission has held three public hearings, in New York City, Nassau and Suffolk.

On November 13th, 2012, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo established a commission under the Moreland Act to among other things investigate the response, preparation, and management of New York’s power utility companies with respect to several major storms impacting the State, including Hurricanes Sandy and Irene, and Tropical Storm Lee.

The Commission issued an interim report on January 7th, which can be found at http://moreland.ny.gov/sites/default/files/MAC-Interim-Report1-7-2013.pdf. A PowerPoint presentation summarizing the findings is also available at http://moreland.ny.gov/sites/default/files/MorelandPresentation.pdf.
