Novice Squad Plays Like Giants

The eleven players from Kings Bay’s Rockaway novice basketball team might be smaller than most of their competition, but they play like giants on the court.

The team cruised to a 29-23 victory over Brooklyn’s Kings Bay squad this past weekend. Rockaway started out sluggish in the early Saturday morning game allowing Brooklyn to take an 8-5 lead after the first quarter. Strong rebounding from Dante Dasilvia, 9 boards, 2 blocks, kept the game tight. Dominick Maiorano sank a few jumpers in the second frame to rally Rockaway to an 11-10 lead at the break.

The defense of Joseph Featherstone, Patrick Powderly, and Daniel Endall got ferocious in the 3rd stopping Brooklyn on almost every chance. Ian Byrne poured 6 of his points in the quarter and Maiorano would add 4 more. Byrne and Maiorano would lead all scorers with 10 points apiece.

The 4th quarter started with Rockaway leading 22-14 when Jack Collins took control scoring 3 points in the final frame, while his team from the beach played “not to lose” during the remainder of the game. Little Pete Maiorano found his way onto the court and missed his only shot in the Rockaway victory.
