High Tide Rolls Close To Beachfront Homes

Recent high tides, gusty winds, drenching storms and Nor’easters all of which have visited Rockaway since Superstorm Sandy continue to take a toll on local beaches. All oceanfront homes on more than a mile of beach in Belle Harbor and Neponsit suffered considerable or severe damage and now sit perilously close to the shoreline. These photos were taken two hours after high tide. One resident who lives just a few houses off the beach remarked, “I used to love seeing the ocean run up on the beach at high tide or during stormy weather but now this makes you really think. Makes you wonder about fixing your house at all. The dunes are gone and there’s hardly any sand here.”
