Goodbye 2012 – You’re Invited to 2013
Well, as 2012 comes to a close it’s easy to predict that it’s a year that won’t be forgotten in these parts. Hurricane Donna in 1960 is remembered as the time when “the ocean met the bay.” A video titled Hurricane Donna Hits The Rockaways is worth viewing on Youtube. It has amazing video of Beach 116 street under water.
Interestingly, the people in the footage are celebrating the flood as some splash about in the waters and others meet on the intact boardwalk to wave gleefully at the camera. The camera catches a missing fender on a car; the boardwalk is not only intact but apparently cars used it as a roadway to avoid flooded streets.
The point is, though historic, Hurricane Donna doesn’t compare to Sandy. We don’t know if it will be simply referred to as “Sandy” or Superstorm Sandy or Hurricane Sandy or when Hell Really Did Break Loose but it will remembered forever and not in the mostly quaint way Hurricane Donna is.
Lives were lost this time, families displaced; property damaged beyond calculation. There is no question: 2012 will be a defining year in the history of Rockaway. And so will 2013.
As we start to rebuild and recover there will inevitably be setbacks and unforeseen challenges but through it all we should realize that we – all of us –are taking steps to make Rockaway better than ever. New is coming – new houses, new stores and businesses, new roads, eventually a new boardwalk. While all this happens, we hope you will take part by sharing your ideas and opinions.
The Bag of Mail is among the most widely read parts of The Wave. We’d like to remind you to use this community forum. It’s the perfect place to vent, to inform, to trigger debate. Neighbors like to know what neighbors are thinking. So, please contribute to the Bag of Mail. Too often, people feel like their opinions don’t matter or their viewpoints aren’t represented. The Bag of Mail is read by thousands. We invite you to address those thousands. More than ever, Rockaway needs ideas and new voices.
Please be heard in 2013. It will be another historic year.
