‘Today’ Surprises Belle Harbor Students

On Friday, December 21, The Today Show presented the story Belle Harbor’s P.S./M.S. 114, one the schools hardest by Hurricane Sandy. Much was destroyed in the hurricane – including the gym, teachers’ lounge and auditorium.

“As you know, about 30,000 New Yorkers were affected by Hurricane Sandy,” said a Today Show spokesperson, “including many living in the Rockaways where the emotional and physical devastation is still prominent throughout the community”.

During the early morning segment The Today Show revealed a holiday surprise from Walmart to help give back much of what was lost. More than 400 Belle Harbor students along with faculty were surprised with new instruments for the band, sporting equipment, art room supplies, computers and more.

To provide additional holiday cheer to students who lost a lot personally, each student received a holiday gift from Walmart - an iPod Nano.

Topping off the event, rapper/ comedian/actor/media personality Nick Cannon was on hand to surprise the students with an additional holiday gift.
