(Photos by Dan Guarino) Santa Claus came to Broad Channel in a big way on Sunday, December 23.

Santa and Jet Towing and Auto Body of Brooklyn brought gifts and Christmas joy to youngsters at the East 17 Road Park.

Accompanied by several giant tow trucks, St. Nick rode in on a huge red flatbed ‘sleigh’. He also posed for pictures with children, parents and passersby.

Also on that day the Broad Channel Athletic Club hosted a successful donated toy giveaway. The festive event took place at the BCAC Memorial Field at the opposite end of Broad Channel.

All BCAC volunteers gave of their time, talent and energy even while dealing with hurricane related disruptions to their own homes and lives.

The post-Sandy holiday season has been particularly difficult for area children, many of whom lost beloved toys during the hurricane.

As one Rockaway woman recently put it “(My daughter) Caoibhe laments constantly about her kitchen, Barbie’s and princess bed. Small children really miss their toys.” She noted efforts like these are a “fitting way to put a smile on their faces.”

These two events brought more than a few smiles to the children of Broad Channel, and to the parents, too.
