Weekend Events Brighten Holiday Season
Coming in on the heels of Sandy, four local events will help brighten the holiday season for Rockaway children and adults alike.
On Saturday December 22 the Mount Carmel Baptist Church, in association with the Footprints Family, will host a community toy giveaway starting at 11 a.m.
The event, held at the church, will bring hundreds of toys for the children of Carleton Manor, Edgemere, Hammels and Arverne just in time for Christmas. Children must be present to receive toys; there will be one toy per child.
Also on Saturday the NYPD JRIP Unit will present a holiday party from 12 to 4 p.m. at P.S. 42 at 488 Beach 66 Street in Arverne. There will food, refreshments, entertainment, a DJ and gifts for all the kids. For more information call P.O. Senior at 646-373-4867. All children must be accompanied by a parent.
MakeMyMotherProud will be bringing Christmas to the Rockaways with their Santa’s Sleigh Ride starting at 12 Noon on Saturday December 22.
Santa will be making stops, taking pictures with kids and distributing gifts from Beach 15th to Beach 116th.
“Look for dancing elves, singing Santa’s helper, toys and Santa!” says founder Lakia Echols. “Please listen for Christmas music in your area. We are going to be loud!”
At the Joseph P. Addabbo Health Center, 1288 Central Avenue, a holiday luncheon to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy will be hosted by Chutney Pride and Elegant Floral Design from 1 to 5 p.m..
Volunteers will also distribute toys donated through the largest NYC Caribbean LGBT Charity Toys for Tots event.
