The Veterinary Corner

Commentary By Jay Rogoff And Allan Simon, DVM

Thanks to the support of our clients and this wonderful community we are part of, the Animal Hospital of the Rockaways is moving forward toward a grand reopening. We are continuing to help the pets of the community Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We are able to perform almost all outpatient procedures.

Bathing is available as well as grooming by Margaret. Dr. Hess is temporarily in Brooklyn at a veterinary hospital while we are in this transition stage.

She is available for ultrasounds, surgery and consults with her many Rockaway clients. Please call the Animal Hospital of the Rockaways at 718-474-0500, so we can have your pet’s records and information sent and we can help set up appointments.

Dr. Simon and Dr. Rogoff are continuing to donate their time, seeing all clients and all hurricane affected patients regard-less of their financial situation.

We are trying to get assistance for peo-ple who qualify. House calls are available on a limited basis.

Due to the nature of the flood, and due to recent confirmed outbreaks of the disease, our veterinarians are recommending vaccination against Leptospirosis.

In dogs of any age that become ill, the leptospira spread rapidly through the pet’s blood stream, usually causing high fevers, depression and joint pain.

Leptospira produce powerful toxins that can attack the liver and kidneys, leading to failure of these organs.

Strains of lepto vary in their intensity and in the portions of the body they attack most severely. Some varieties primarily cause liver damage, while others concentrate in the kidneys.

In other pets, blood fails to clot normally, which leads to bleeding. Please call for more information. We are seeing an increased incidence of respiratory illnesses as well.

Prompt treatment is recommended as this can quickly become a serious problem.

Both Dr. Simon and Dr. Rogoff are continuing to work with local organizations whose mission is to get businesses up and running as soon as possible.

This past Tuesday we had another, now popular, big dog and cat food giveaway.

We notify the community of its arrival on our facebook page, The Animal Hospital of the Rockaways.

Soon we will be expanding our hours and begin boarding pets.

We believe in Rockaway and its rebuilding.

We are all helping and supporting each other.
