OV Man Busted In Gambling Slay

By Howard Schwach

An Ocean Village man was busted early this week for a November homicide inside the sprawling housing project.

Court sources say that Devaughn Davis, 28, was at his apartment at 146 Beach 59 Street in Arverne at about 5:10 p.m. on November 28 when he got into a heated argument with Barshiem Sanford, 17, of 118 Beach 59 Street.

Police sources say that the argument was over a gambling debt that was owed to Davis.

Sanford allegedly shot Davis twice in the torso and the lower back.

When police arrived, they found Davis unconscious and unresponsive in the ninth floor hallway. EMS workers declared him dead at the scene.

Sanford fled the scene, allegedly disposed of the firearm by throwing it over a gate near the A Train line on Beach 63 Street.

Citywide police sources say that Davis has several arrests dating back to 2001.

Sanford was arraigned on November 30 and is being held without bail for his next hearing on December 14.

The homicide was the sixth of the year in the 101 Precinct.
