Our Voice At LIPA

Dear Editor,

Rockaway residents from one end of the peninsula to the other suffered from LIPA's failure to prepare FOR and properly respond to a major storm. There is much blame to be shared. Most residents have strong opinions and several investigations are under way.

One area that has not been discussed is our lack of representation on LIPA's Board of Trustees. There are supposed to be 15 Trustees, but after resignations there are only eight. The Trustees are unpaid individuals who meet monthly to approve budgets, improvement plans and contracts for the actual management of the system. They are appointed by the Governor, Senate Majority

Leader and Assembly Speaker.

A quick review of the current Trustees shows residents of Manhasset, Greenvale, Point Lookout, Stony Brook, and East Williston. The only Trustee with an apparent connection to Queens is a construction executive from Flushing who contributed $15,000 to Andrew Cuomo's campaign.

It is time that Rockaway was represented on this Board. Perhaps LIPA would be more concerned with Rockaway service if one of our local residents was on the Board. None of the Trustees seem to have any training in electrical engineering.

The ideal candidate would have degrees in electrical engineering and public finance, be active in Rockaway civic affairs, able to attend monthly Trustee meetings in Uniondale and report back to our community through Community Board 14 and our local press.

If you have some of these qualifications, I suggest you send your letter of interest and resume to Governor Cuomo, Speaker Silver and Republican Senate Leader Dean Skelos. A letter of support from our local legislators Senators Sanders and Addabbo, and Assembly Members Titus and Goldfeder would help. Send a copy of your application to the WAVE and Rockaway Point News so that we can all support your efforts.

The next meeting of LIPA”s Board of Trustees will be on December 13 at 11 AM in Uniondale. Maybe a few of us should show up and state our case. If you want to car pool contact me at bkdodgers47@aol.com.
