Big Day At Fort Tilden For Rockaway Rugby

By Alan Shaw

The Fisheads showed up to play some tough rugby on ‘Friends and Family Day’ in Fort Tilden on Saturday. With a crucial game against Rochester, this game meant a lot in the standings.

The first five minutes Rockaway got rolling with a score by Bryan Amberry, Rochester immediately answered back and going into the half the Fisheads were down close. The second half was very different as Rockaway broke it open. With a dirty play by Rochester, Scotty Bloodstein became furious with the fear of doctor copays adding up for him (a whopping $10). The team record for injury time is coming down to a close race between Rob Palmer and Scott Bloodstein and it’s still anybody’s game. This got the pack going and forward captain TJ Mahoney continued a stellar season going into beast mode tackling anything in his sight, very salty.

The scores started to pile on, even bside player Brendan Fitzgerald somehow found the try-zone. With each try scored scrum-half Davy was able to connect on all extra-point attempts. While scoring was no issue in the second half for Rockaway, back line captain Tommy Amberry and a rare appearance from Burke held down the defense for the remainder of the game.

The Fisheads would like to thank all who made it out to the match last Saturday; it was great to see Fisheads old and young taking in the day. A big thank you to John “Grouch” McCann who put together the festivities after the game. Rockaway is currently in second place in the division and will be entering the playoffs in April.
