Help Our Low-Income Seniors

In New York City, half of the low-income households eligible for the Food Stamp Program are not receiving this benefit. Make a difference in your community by conducting an outreach. The Financial Advocacy Program is seeking volunteers age 55+ to serve as food stamp outreach counselors dedicated to raising awareness about senior citizen eligibility.

Volunteers participate in a five-day training program beginning in January 2013, which covers eligibility requirements and application procedures for food stamps. Volunteers will then be places in senior centers in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx – as part of a partnership with the NYC Department for the Aging.

Eligibility requirements include a personal interview, successful completion of the training and a minimum commitment of six hours per week for one year of volunteer service. For more information about the volunteering program, go to: www.cssny.org.
