Carter Showcases Book To St. John’s Students
Vivian Carter, author of “Images of America: Rockaway Beach,” spoke with graduate and undergraduate students of St. John’s University recently, at the Barnes and Noble book store on Union Turnpike near the campus. The presentation, entitled “The Arcadia Publishing Phenomenon,” was moderated by Kristin Szylvian, Associate Professor of History. Students who attended are enrolled in Szylvian’s fall semester Public History course, which focuses on issues in historic preservation, cultural resources management, museum studies, and archival management, and attracts graduate and undergraduate students in education and history, and library science majors.
Carter related the difficulties and obstacles of gathering materials for her book, and the enormous sense of satisfaction and success she achieved once it was published. Fellow Arcadia author Carl Ballenas, teacher at Immaculate Conception School of Jamaica Estates, also joined in the discussion. Ballenas detailed how his students assisted in the research and writing of two Arcadia books, and successfully reached out to elected officials to fund the book creation process, as well.
