Larcenies Up Throughout Peninsula
Larcenies continue a year-long trend, growing by the month throughout the peninsula, according to statistics provided by the NYPD.
Officials say that the increase in larceny comes from two factors: the growing unemployment problem on the peninsula, which is now approaching 20 percent; and the increase of electronic equipment such as iPhones, iPads, Smartphones and the like, which are easy to take and attractive to would-be thieves.
In the 100 Precinct in Rockaway Park, there have been 134 grand larcenies and 269 cases of petit larceny so far this year. Last year, at the same time period, there had been 97 cases of grand larceny and 196 cases of petit larceny.
In the 101 Precinct in Far Rockaway there were 76 grand larcenies and 257 petit larcenies in 2011, as opposed to 158 grand larcenies and 337 petit larcenies to mid-September this year.
In addition, grand larceny, auto incidents are up in the 100 Precinct from 14 to 22 and in the 101 Precinct from 33 to 39.
