The Last Paddle Of Summer

The Paddlers enjoy the last ride of the summer. The Paddlers enjoy the last ride of the summer. It was the last day of summer, and a group of local paddlers, plus visitors hailing from Italy and Australia, completed a circumnavigation of Jamaica Bay in kayaks on Friday. The expedition was led by Sebago Canoe Club’s outgoing Commodore (Tony Pignatello), new Commodore (Walter Lewandowski), and local paddler Vivian Carter, a supporter of Rockaway’s Gateway Bike & Boathouse.

The voyage was initiated by three Long Island City Boathouse supporters, RaNae, Rosalba and Leona, who have been trying to visit all the bridges over New York City waterways in the past three months.

The kayakers launched out of Riis Landing at about 10:15 a.m., then headed along the Rockaway shoreline, under the Marine Parkway Bridge and the Cross Bay Bridge, taking a short break on Subway Island. Facing difficult wind conditions, they proceeded along the eastern shores of Broad Channel, to the North Channel Bridge, and past the Fountain Avenue landfill. The crew landed back at Sebago’s Canarsie dock shortly after 4 p.m., having completed a most challenging journey.
