9/11 Sponsor-A-Star Program Ends October 18

The Americana Stars Memorial, designed and created by Doreen Lynn Saunders, is a 200-foot long mural consisting of 50 separate fabric panels memorializing the victims of September 11, 2001 and 1993. There will be more than 2,984 stars cross-stitched by hand, a different one for each victim with the victim’s name stitched under their star.

When completed, it will be shown at the new National September 11 Memorial Museum in NYC and will be available to travel to other museums and educational venues around the country and worldwide.

The Harbor Light Pub, located at 129- 18 Newport Avenue, Rockaway Park, will be hosting a special “Thank You” Buffet and Raffle with open bar and acoustical music accompaniment on Saturday, October 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. for everyone who participates in the memorial project’s Sponsor-A-Star program by October 18.

The primary goal is to have the stars of every victim from the Rockaways and Broad Channel sponsored. You can help to get every star sponsored by visiting www.AmericanaStars.org and click on the Sponsor-A-Star button in the left sidebar. It is an easy 2 step process.

“For the past several years, I have been visiting a dear friend whose family has lived in the Rockaways for more than 50 years,” Saunders says. “I have become quite taken with the closeness of the entire community and the people here and hope to visit for many years to come.” As a member of the Rockaway Artists Alliance, she first presented it to the Rockaway residents at their gallery in Fort Tilden last year on September 11, 2011.

The Americana Stars Memorial is officially sponsored through Fractured Atlas, a 501(c)3 non-profit arts service organization in New York City. All sponsorships are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. One hundred percent of all funds will be used for project expenses, says Saunders.
