PS/MS 105 Takes Ocean Action
To start the club activities for this year, 105 Kids Care Club members participated in the International Coastal Cleanup. Art teacher Norma Allende, parent Linda Camacho and thirteen students started this year’s club activities by volunteering their time and effort to pick up coastal debris at Beach 59 Street. The event was organized by the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance with Beach Captain Jeanne DuPont.
Plastic bags and bottles, straws, wrappers, cigarette butts, are a large part of the pollution problem in the ocean. It comes from human hands and can be prevented. Every year thousands of volunteers all over the planet remove millions of pounds of trash, which is sorted and counted. The results are kept in a database that helps to find solutions to reduce ocean pollution, and to create policies to protect its wildlife for future generations. Through this activity, students receive life learning experiences, which help them to become proactive members of the community, while learning about science and the consequences of human behavior.
