Rockaway Rugby Takes Off After Win Against Bayonne
Rockaway set the tone early for their home opener this past weekend in Fort Tilden. Rockaway Rugby is back and after a close defeat in Montauk the previous weekend, the Fisheads looked to get back on track against Bayonne.
With superstars, Rob ‘Coach’ Palmer and Scotty Bloodstein sitting out with injuries, Rockaway wasted no time with scores from 8 different players. A Rockaway club record for assists, (stats for assists began recording in 2012). Rockaway coach Dougie MacConnell said, “This is the best group of players in over ten years for Rockaway; it’s going to be an exciting season to say the least.”
Even after a convincing win, Rockaway rugby looks to build and continue to grow.
“We can do so much more!” screamed Tom French, followed by “Shut up” by Capt. TJ Mahoney. Back captain Tommy Amberry’s biggest concern is not the skills of his back line but rather which end-zone dance he will use this season.
The Salsa has been put into retirement. The team is solid throughout the 15-man roster, newly acquired scrumhalf and Bob Johnson roommate/employee Davey was able to convert on 9 kick attempts in difficult winds. Rockaway came out victorious with a 44-36 victory for Bayonne.
With Legends on hand the young squad wanted to show how good they were capable of being. Some of the Rockaway Dinosaurs in attendance taking in the action were John McCann, Oakie, Tippy, Bonesaw Lunny, Bob Johnson and Tim Kelly (TK is an active member).
Rockaway will be traveling to Connecticut for their next match this Saturday. The following Saturday, October 6, Rockaway is home at Fort Tilden at 1 p.m. As always we welcome you to come out and support the local squad. Rockaway practices each Thursday beginning at 7 p.m. under the lights at Fort Tilden. All ages are welcome to come out and join in the practices.
