Kosmos Atalanta Wins On Late Second Half Goal
The Kosmos Atalanta GU13 entered their Sunday morning game against Massapequa trying to continue their winning ways from last week. They faced a daunting task without their starting goalie and only having 11 players available. The girls took to the task with gusto despite the heat which made the turf field feel like a hot Rockaway beach.
The first half was a back and forth affair with each team trying to penetrate and find weakness in the other’s defense. The Atalanta side had the better of the opportunities but failed to capitalize on any of their chances. The defense and midfield were well able to stop most of Massapequa’s forays. Anything else was cleaned up by goalie Maggie Comer. At the half the score was 0-0 but with another half to go and no subs the team was going to have to dig deep.
The second half began with the coaches worried about the girls’ ability to withstand the heat. The girls answered with a loud “Not today.“ The defense of Kelsey Flynn, Jessica Buckley, Rian Courtney, and Katie Sammon refused to yield and consistently fed the ball forward to the midfielders. As the half continued it was the Atalanta squad that was gaining the upper hand. The midfielders (Maddie McDade, Rhiannon Gormley, Claire Hughes, and Makayla Beehler) were dominating the middle of the field and carrying the ball forward. The forwards Maeve Regan and Grace Kane looked to strike the ball toward the goal or distribute to their onrushing counterparts.
All of the hard work finally paid off in a very short span. The Massapequa resolve finally gave way like the sand castle against the tide as Maeve Regan and Rhiannon Gormley scored in quick order. Kosmos won 1-0 and Massapequa went home to watch the Giants.
