Kearney X-Country Team Shines At Villa Bear
The Bishop Kearney varsity and freshmen cross country team competed in the tenth annual Villa Bear Invitational last Saturday. Team captain, Krysta “The Marine Park Glider” ran a personal best with a time of 17 minutes and 27 seconds for the 2 ½ mile hilly course at the historic Van Corlandt Park in the Bronx. She captured the first medal of the season for the team. Senior Natalie Juliano followed closely behind with another fine performance with a time of 19 minutes 16 seconds.
The freshmen team had a stellar display on their debut. The team consists of Therese (Tessy) Gallagher, (Belle Harbor) Jacqueline (Jackie) Gallagher (Belle Harbor), Kailey O’Grady, Annaliese Tucci and Kaitlin Monahan. They were up for the challenge in their debut over the 1 ½ mile course. Gallagher led the frosh team with a ninth place finish out of 80 runners, and her time of 10 minutes 55 seconds was only 5 seconds from the school record held by older sister, Mary Gallagher in 2005. Tessy’s sister Jackie Gallagher finished in 11th place with a blazing time of 11 minutes, 6 seconds. O’Grady earned 15th place, Tucci ended in 20th place and Monahan 25th place, they were all awarded medals.
Bishop Kearney was awarded the second place trophy in this meet. (This was a highly competitive race.) They competed against girls from the CHSAA, public and private schools.
Congratulations to the varsity and freshmen teams season opener. Best of luck to the Kearney girls, when they compete next week in the Xavier Invitational.
