Most Disappointing Moment

Dear Editor,

Monday night (9/10/12) was my most disappointing moment on Community Board 14 in my almost 25 years on the board.

I made a motion that the Parks Committee meet to “exclusively hear from the public regarding beach, boardwalk and bay usage issues.” Not one person on the community board seconded my motion even though the last time we had such a meeting on July 17, there were more than 100 people at the meeting and Borough Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski said it was the largest Parks Committee meeting she had ever attended.

Think about that, in a beach community not one person on the community board was interested in hearing from the public regarding the use of our most important public asset. How is that in the public interest?

Secondly, after repeated questioning CB14 Chair Dolores Orr finally admitted that she secretly writes the minutes of the Parks Committee meetings. She now selects the committee, the chair, the venue, the meeting date, the agenda and now she secretly writes the minutes. Then why have a committee?

Rather than express outrage at Dolores Orr turning the Parks Committee into a charade, Dan Mundy said Dolores Orr should move on to other agenda items. Not one board member defended my right to ask questions and get answers. How is silencing a board member in the public interest?

As a member of the community board, if you don’t serve the community’s interest, then whose interest do you serve?
