Martin De Porres

Dear Editor,

I read the article with regard to Martin De Porres. I am a parent of a child who went to the school in Elmont, which was a career development school. She went there after being sexually assaulted in Beach Channel High School. There is a whole background other than the fact that she was assaulted with regard to her special education education (which was non existent) because the board of education basically just pushed her through, the fact is the board of education failed her and only moved to place her accurately after her being hurt. I could go on about that but I have a lawsuit pending.

As a parent, my daughter entered Martin D with a behavioral problem (mental) along with learning disability, she was on a first grade reading and math level, had learned nothing over the course of her scholastic life. I put her in Martin D because if was a safe place, not for education, but that all changed when the school was able to teach her. Long and short of it she graduated this June with a high school diploma, along with other students. This school would be a huge ASSET to the area and to the children who will be able to go there and get an education, because most of the children do not have support from outside sources and the directors, teachers and staff are excellent. The school in an excellent foundation for the child to learn and become something for themselves instead of draining the system.
