Contest To Award $10K To Queens Entrepreneur

Queens Economic Development Corporation and Queens Library announce the opening of the Queens StartUP! Business Plan Competition. Participants will get a great opportunity for free entrepreneurial training that will help them succeed, plus a chance to win up to $10,000 in seed funding to help get started.

An optional orientation will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 1, at Queens Central Library, 89-11 Merrick Boulevard, Jamaica. Admission is free. Completed business plans will compete for $10,000 seed money in three categories: food, innovation and communitybased. Additionally, Queens College students are eligible to win $5,000 in a separate category. The competition is sponsored by Citi Foundation and Queens College.

Participants will take four training courses, which will be held monthly from October through January on the following topics: business planning and research; sales and marketing strategies; operations and management; and financial statements and development. They are held in person at Queens Central Library and are free. There are evening and Saturday sessions scheduled. Participants may mix and match. Alternatively, participants may choose to use recorded training sessions for a fee of $25 ($17 for Queens College students).
