SETTING THINGS STRAIGHT! Donnie Penzo is his name and he is the new chef for a year now at Kennedy’s on the Bay Restaurant. I called him Donnie Chestnut in my last column, but I am only as good as my information. (Some people like to play pranks on me and think it is fun to pass me false information) I like to think I am known for the veracity of my column. Admittedly, I make a mistake now and then and especially right after my mini stokes. (I must thank my editor at The Wave for keeping me still on board.) However, I did talk to Donnie and he said, “One day I had a craving for hot dogs and people around me dubbed me Chestnut from Joe Chestnut of Coney Island hot dog eater winner. My column also reported Donnie was from the famous Katz Deli in NYC. That was false, too. It seemed he introduced a pastrami dish to the bar menu. Donnie Penza is from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. He was a chef at the Lotus Club, 66 and Madison Avenue in NYC and the famous steakhouse in Colt Neck in N.J. When he auditioned for Gerard, he liked his fare and found they have many mutual friends. I met Donnie personally on Sunday and he brought out samples of his cuisine for me and my cameraman, David Fasano, to test. The lobster roll was so, so tasty and refreshing with his fresh herbs. The pasta bolognaise, a real comfort food and some say, “It compares to what Grandma makes.” The stuffed shrimp with crab and Blue Claw crab sauce to die for and baked clams, another favorite. Carmelized custard with strawberries and rice pudding with raisins and almond cream completed our tasting menu. Every bite was a delightful and pleasing surprise. I must say with sincerity, I can highly recommend any one of these dishes. Compliments to Chef Donnie Penza. He mentioned porterhouse steak for two is outstanding Thursday, Friday and Saturday. He is introducing tapas on the bar menu and raw tuna and sushi. Kennedy’s is now serving International cuisine along with their corned beef and cabbage and prime rib dinners. The servings are huge. Bring your appetite and enjoy the flavors of the food and the beautiful view of the Bay, congenial people and at certain times, music and entertainment. It is their pleasure to please and yours to be pleased. A delightful dining experience.

Did you know you can make your own potato chips in a microwave? Mastrad presented it at the gift show and Eventi Hotel rooftop. They give you the potato slicer and plastic container for potatoes to place in the microwave. They are delicious and if you don’t want all that salt on them you can garnish them with your favorite herbs. Great idea and easy.
