Fences, Piles Of Sand, Rumors Abound
The installation by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation of a temporary fence around huge sand piles on the beach near Beach 121 Street drew a lot of attention this week. According to parks officials, the plan is to move the sand piles from the enclosed area to Beach 90 Street as part of a replenishment project and the department felt the fencing would make it safer for the equipment operators to work. They also intend to leave their equipment on site in the fenced area for the duration of the project which should last a few weeks.
Many different rumors began circulating via email and social media that the Parks Department was placing dunes to block ocean views and some more extreme rumors even included plans to remove sand from the sandstarved shores of Rockaway to help build a new golf course.
