St. Francis SFDS-“S” Team Wins On Stormy Day

The two boys third grade soccer teams for St. Francis, SFDS-“S” vs. SFDS-“X”, faced off in a storm shortened season opener on Saturday, September 8. The first tornado of the day came at Fort Tilden and not Breezy Point, as two first period goals by the St. Francis “S” squad put them up 2-0.

Luke Carson put a penalty shot in early, then got the second on a great pass by Freddie Teich. Solid defense by Demetri Condolios and Matthew Martin, plus the hustle of Jojo Grillo, Chris Light, Gunner Skammel and Matthew Sweeny, held back any scoring attempts. Robbie Agoglia was solid minding the net in the first half.

With Lenny Mannino taking over goalie duties after the half, the SFDS-“S” offense went back to work as Patrick Ayorvainen scored an early unassisted goal. With Kieran Courtney, Nicholas Fiore, Justin Aleman, Ryan Ureiuoli and Sean O’Hagan all combining to control the ball, the St. Francis “S” team led 3-0.

As the thunder got louder and the rain became heavier, the coaches and referee knew it was time to end it. The next game for SFDS-“S” is under the lights on Friday night at Roxbury.
