On The Road Again
It has been more than five years since my epic ride across the United States to our namesake town of Rockaway Beach, Oregon. That trip and the following year’s journey to Newfoundland, Canada, had the effect of confirming me as a long distance motorcycle traveler and activist fundraiser. I made those two trips for the benefit of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and all of the people who suffer from Cystic Fibrosis around the world. Thanks to the generosity of all who contributed and to the grace of God, I was able to raise a total of $20,000 for the CFF. I lived what would become some of my life’s fondest memories on those trips and often pine for the thrill of the far away open road. Sure, I have been riding steadily, but not quite as much as I would like to. There are many reasons for my not being able to satisfy my wanderlust; pursuing my education (two summers spent in Ireland at the National University of Ireland, Galway), family obligations and . . . more education. In those years between 2008 and the present, I have had some great experiences atop my steel pony, riding around County Kerry, Ireland and travelling up to Quebec, Canada, along with all of the weekend trips up to the Hudson Valley and Lake George. Excursions such as these keep me sane, but they just don’t feed the Jones when it comes to long range adventure riding. It is time for me to get the motor running and really ride again! Juvenile Diabetes is a killer! It viciously attacks the most vulnerable members of our society, the children, with a vengeance that rocks families to their core. It is time that we put an end to this horrible disease once and for all. I have a plan to put $50,000 into the hands of the medical researchers who are working around the clock to find a cure. I believe that if we fund this research there will be a cure sooner rather than later. Here is my plan: Beginning on September 22 and ending on October 22, I am going to ride my trusty motorcycle across the United States to Rockaway Beach, California and back again. I am personally going to pay for all of the accommodations, fuel, meals, maintenance and incidentals which will come to between $5,000 and $6,000. I am going to document my trip in this column on a weekly basis here in The Wave and on a daily basis on YouTube and Facebook. I will do all of the riding, writing, filming, and photographing, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the show! There is one more thing; I know you knew there was a catch! Please help me to help the children who suffer from Juvenile Diabetes by making a donation at JDRFdonordrive.com/EdShevlin. Alternately, you can email me at ShevysJDRFride@aol.com and I’ll meet you at a time and place of your convenience to pick up a check made out to the JDRF, or, you can become my Facebook friend, or, you can visit my Facebook event page, Shevy’s Ride For The JDRF Kids! Whew! o that’s it! I have made available a myriad of methods for you to enjoy my adventure by performing a mitzvah for the children. Please help. See you, On the Road Again, Shevy Biker Tips: There is a send-off party/ fundraiser on the eve of my departure (9/21) at Jameson’s beginning at 7 p.m., featuring a Chinese Auction, live music, food, open bar and more all for a $40 donation!
