Pirates Sail Into Temple Beth-El
On Sunday, October 21 at 2:00 p.m., the Gilbert & Sullivan Yiddish Light Opera Company will dock their ship at Temple Beth-El of Rockaway Park with their delightful production of “The Pirates of Penzance,“ otherwise known as “Di Yam Gazlonim.“
This comic operetta, with English dialogue and Yiddish lyrics, will be readily understandable to everyone whether he or she understands Yiddish or not, because there are many funny asides to the audience to keep them advised of what is going on.
The story revolves around the half-deaf nursemaid Ruth, who apprentices her charge, Fredric, to a pirate instead of a pilot because she misunderstood the word. The misunderstandings go on from there with one laugh after another. With witty lyrics, clever dialogue, wonderful costumes and joyous music this is a performance that should not be missed.
The Gilbert & Sullivan Yiddish Light Opera Company previously performed at Temple Beth-El of Rockaway Park with their production of “The Mikado.“ They are a well-known company which has appeared throughout the country, in states that include Florida and New Jersey, and in Canada and England.
Reservations are $10 per person and can be made by calling Temple Beth-El of Rockaway Park at 718-634-8100 and sending your check, made payable to “Temple Beth-El of Rockaway Park,“ to 201 Beach 121 Street, Rockaway Park, NY 11694. Reservations the day of the performance are $20 per person.
