The Belle Harbor Property Owners Association has launched a new online petition that they hope will go a long way in convincing local lawmakers that the need for a hospital to serve the western end of the peninsula is a crisis that must be addressed sooner rather than later.
The petition was launched on August 24 with the help of Councilmember Eric Ulrich.
“An Emergency Service Facility located in close proximity to the western section of the Rockaway Peninsula is essential to meet the medical needs of all residents and the tens of thousands of visitors to our community,” the group wrote in their announcement. “With the closing of Peninsula Hospital residents and thousands of visitors have been left vulnerable when seeking emergency room services on a timely basis.”
They insist that the situation is a matter of life and death and the extra minutes make a world of difference especially in an isolated community.
“We are petitioning the Governor to use the power of his office to resolve this problem and find a suitable location on the west end of the Rockaway Peninsula for an emergency service facility,” the homeowners association said of their goal with the petition.
