Speak Up Rockaway!

Dear Editor,

Being a local professional and longtime Rockaway resident, I have seen many changes within this community and have some serious concerns for the future of our community. I would like to voice my opinion on quite a disturbing issue. Although I do not have a pet, and have not in some time, many of my family members and friends here do. There has been increased chatter here in the Rockaway community concerning a newcomer to our neighborhood that has made every effort to engulf herself within our community, participates in many community events, such as Career Day at our local schools, Rockaway Civic Association events as well as outreach at the dog parks. She has helped to transform one of the worst eyesores on Beach 116 to a fantastically beautiful storefront that is simply stunning. Being in the profession that I am in, I have the know-how to research (as it is public knowledge on the web) to verify through the buildings department that the chatter many of us are hearing within this community is in fact true. A local landlord that once called Rockaway their home (and no longer lives in our community) is preventing this newcomer from providing a service that is much needed here in the Rockaways. I want to take this opportunity to ask others in this community to take a stand behind Dr. Karina Salvo on her endeavors in opening her practice PawPrints on Beach 116 that has remained closed for what appears to be almost a year now. It’s time we support those newcomers that meet these struggles with such landlords. Rockaway needs improvement and we need to support those improvements. Perhaps someone at The Wave or anyone else out there can help get to the bottom of this and facilitate the beginning of a vital service for the Rockaway community and their pets!
