ArtSPLASH On The Brink

Rockaway Artists Alliance is holding an ArtSPLASH Fundraiser to benefit RAA programming. The festive evening takes place Saturday, September 8 at 7 p.m. in sTudio 7 Gallery in the Rockaway Center for the Arts in Fort Tilden. The evening will feature the artwork of Art- SPLASH gracing the walls and spaces of the gallery, fine food, live music and entertainment including comedy by Sheba Mason, singer Gary Russo, dubbed ‘The 2nd Avenue Sinatra,’ accompanied by singer/musician Apryl Green. The $100 individual ticket price automatically enters you to win two round-trip tickets to anywhere JetBlue flies. You will also have an opportunity to win dozens of prizes, including dinner certificates, merchandise gift cards, spa and wellness packages donated by the businesses and individuals of our community who are generously recognizing the value of RAA’s work artistically, educationally and socially.

In addition, our fundraiser is a night to thank our past board members, staff, educators, patrons of the arts and the many volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure an arts and cultural community is sustained in the Rockaways.

This year, we are proud to honor:

- NPS Park Partner of the Year.

ArtSPLASH is RAA’s biggest exhibit of the year, filling the spaces of sTudio 6 and sTudio 7 and the indoor and outdoor stages of the Rockaway Center for the Arts at Fort Tilden. It features visual, performing and literary artists in a wide variety of disciplines and mediums. Dates are September 8-October 7, 2012. The opening reception is Sunday, September 16, 12-4 p.m., sTudio 6 Gallery. Gallery hrs: Saturday and Sunday, 12-4 p.m. and by appointment. Admission is free to exhibit and reception.

Election for the RAA board of directors will be held in December, as they are annually. To be a candidate or to vote, you must be a paid member in good standing by the time of the RAA general meeting on September 10. Information regarding candidate qualifications, election dates and deadlines will be sent out via email September through November. The timeframe for consideration as a candidate begins at the September general meeting and closes at the October general meeting.

RAA vice president/string instrument musician/ photographer/poet/column ist/bonvivant/lion tamer/philanthropist/ Teddy Roosevelt impersonator/comic Dan Guarino will next be performing his stand-up comedy at the New York Comedy Club on Saturday, September 15 at 10 p.m. The club is located at 241 East 24 Street in Manhattan. Please call after 2 p.m. to reserve a seat. Let them know you are coming to see Dan. There is a $15 cover/two drink minimum.

This is the last weekend to catch “Blithe Spirit,” the witty, crackling comedy by Noel Coward, at the Rockaway Theatre Company, Post Theater in Fort Tilden. Final performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.
