Carman Sets Sights On Rugby Excellence
Kelly Carman began her life at the University of Scranton in the fall of 2008. She was recruited to play on the women’s basketball team and in her first year, they won their conference championship, and advanced to the NCAA Division III Elite Eight.
That spring, she joined the Scranton women’s rugby club team.
This team had been on a massive losing streak and was in Division 4. That first semester, she joined the team, fell in love with the sport as the Lady Valkyries went undefeated.
In the fall of 2009, Carman chose to continue with rugby at the expense of basketball. Her team continued their win streak all the way to the championship and progressed to Division 3. The Lady Valkyries win streak continued into Carman’s junior year into another championship, and a subsequent promotion to Division 2. The Lady Valkyries would now be playing against teams such as national champions Shippensburg.
Carman finished off a successful four years on the team, and helped carry her teammates on and off the field, a true team player and a fierce friend. She performed her first hat trick in the first half of a game this past fall against Bloomsburg, scoring three times in a game.
This past spring, Carman suffered a partial ACL tear playing dodgeball and had forgotten the five D’s: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge. Carman will return to Scranton in the fall to begin her master’s degree and continue to play rugby.
